ISLAMABAD (Kashmir English): The National Emergency Operation Center (NEOC) issued an avalanche and snowfall alert for northern and mountainous areas. A western weather system will deliver additional snowfall to high-altitude regions during the upcoming 24 to 48-hour period.
The NEOC released a weather advisory, which will remain active through the period from January 23 to January 29. Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Kashmir may experience heavy snowfall, while the northern and hilly areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa will also receive snowfall.
The increased snow accumulation has elevated the possibility of avalanches occurring. Authorities have issued a warning that mountain road traffic will experience disruptions because additional snow will worsen the existing conditions in Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Kashmir, northern KP, and northern Balochistan.
From January 24 onwards, a cold wave will impact most of the country, while the Punjab plains and northern Sindh will experience dense fog during nighttime and morning hours.
Officials recommend that citizens to stay home during snow and fog. Travellers must adhere to traffic police directions while implementing safety measures. Provincial disaster authorities must keep their emergency teams active at all times while they operate snow removal equipment and response units.
The NEOC will maintain its condition monitoring activities while distributing condition updates to all relevant organizations. The “Pak NDMA Disaster Alert” mobile application allows citizens to access real-time emergency information.
