NEELUM VALLEY (Kashmir English): The main highway in Neelum Valley has been restored and traffic is now flowing again after a powerful cloudburst in the upper region of Janwai caused major disruption and damage. The road, which had been blocked by debris and flooding, was reopened by the Public Works Department (PWD) Neelum after overnight efforts.

The cloudburst occurred during heavy rainfall late Monday night near the tourist spot of Grace Janwai. The sudden downpour triggered a flash flood in Jandran Wala Nallah, resulting in widespread destruction. According to local officials, the flood swept away a connecting bridge in Chardhok, several small watermills, three motorcycles, four shops, a vegetable stall, a medical store, a clinic, and damaged the transmission line of a 50kV power station.

Two houses were completely destroyed, while two others suffered partial damage. The local power facility also sustained damage, leaving parts of the area without electricity.

Thankfully, the State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) reported that no lives were lost. The Janwai police post, rescue workers, and local residents acted quickly to keep people and livestock away from the flooded areas, preventing further harm.

Neelum is a popular tourist destination, especially in the monsoon season. Authorities have warned both residents and visitors to remain cautious, as the area remains vulnerable to sudden weather changes and flash flooding. Tourists currently in Neelum Valley or planning to visit are advised to follow weather alerts and avoid risky travel routes.

Relief and recovery work is ongoing, and the affected communities are receiving assistance from local departments. Emergency response teams are working to restore electricity and provide support to families whose homes and businesses were damaged.

This incident has once again highlighted the challenges Neelum Valley faces during the monsoon season, and officials are urging all citizens to stay alert and prepared for similar weather events in the coming weeks.
