ISLAMABAD (Kashmir English): The National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) has announced a new initiative to honour and encourage organ donation by offering lifetime ID cards to registered donors. These special ID cards will carry a distinctive green heart symbol, recognising citizens’ humanitarian contributions.

In a social media post, NADRA stated that all Pakistani citizens aged 18 and above who are registered with the relevant organ donor authorities are eligible for the NADRA organ donor ID. These individuals can visit any NADRA office to apply for their specially marked smart identity card or NICOP.

For additional convenience, applicants may ask for the NADRA organ donor ID using the PakID mobile app. The initiative seeks to raise awareness about organ donation around the country and give donors a unique mark of respect.

In the same announcement, NADRA introduced a digital system for registering births and deaths in hospitals and healthcare centres throughout Pakistan.

Agreements were recently signed with the Sindh and Balochistan governments during separate ceremonies to implement this system at the provincial level.

In Sindh, the agreement was signed by the Secretary of Health, the Secretary of Local Government, and the Director General of NADRA Karachi.

The event was also attended by Sindh’s Minister for Local Government, Mr Saeed Ghani.

This modernised civil registration system will enable hospitals and health centres to send birth and death data directly to NADRA.

According to the authority, this will ensure accurate and timely updates to the national database. The improved data collection will support economic development and technological advancement under the government’s “Uraan Pakistan” programme

NADRA highlighted that the new data-driven approach will contribute to revolutionary initiatives such as the digital ID system and a broader digital economy.

These reforms are being supported through the World Bank-backed “Digital Economy Enhancement Project”, in partnership with key national institutions.

In a separate announcement, NADRA has also confirmed that Pakistani citizens applying for a national ID card for the first time will receive their card free of cost, provided it is a non-chip version.
