MUZAFFARABAD (Kashmir English): Prime Minister of Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) Faisal Mumtaz Rathore on Friday officially granted tehsil status to Garhi Dupatta, a town in Muzaffarabad district, a notification of which has been issued.

The Board of Revenue has issued the notification after approval from the Finance Department.

Prime Minister Rathore announced the decision while addressing a public gathering in Garhi Dupatta today, saying that today we have fulfilled a long-standing public demand of the area.

“The Pakistan Peoples Party government has fulfilled the promises made to the people within six months,” he said, adding that not only have we announced but made a practical implementation of the tehsil status through an official notification.

Garhi Dupatta is considered an important commercial and administrative hub covering nearly 84 villages and situated at the junction of four constituencies.

The new tehsil status is expected to provide residents with easier access to revenue and other government services at the local level.

A large number of people welcomed the Prime Minister upon his arrival in Garhi Dupatta Bazaar, where flower petals were showered, and slogans in support of the PPP were raised.

Special Assistant Mubashir Munir Awan thanked the Prime Minister and termed the decision a historic step for the region. He said the people of Garhi Dupatta would directly benefit from the establishment of the tehsil.

Later, Prime Minister Faisal Mumtaz Rathore visited the residence of Mubashir Munir Awan and offered Fateha over the death of his maternal uncle, the late Muhammad Yousuf Awan.
