LAHORE (Kashmir English): Director General Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) Irfan Ali Kathia said the monsoon season has officially come to an end, with no prediction of rain in the next week.
In a Friday statement, he announced that water in flooded areas has begun to recede, while river flows throughout Punjab have returned to normal.
Nevertheless, he warned that water levels in the River Sutlej continue to be high and the situation is being closely monitored by authorities.
The head of PDMA informed that sections of the M-5 Motorway had been impacted as a result of floodwater, but clearance activity on the affected section is underway.
“No decision has yet been made about a breach on the motorway, and technical teams are vigilantly monitoring the situation,” he added.
Kathia emphasized that all the concerned departments were on high alert to handle any emergency and further stated that the PDMA was collaborating with the National Highway Authority to facilitate the smooth resumption of traffic on affected roads.
The government official added that the province had largely passed the emergency stage of the recent floods but that there will be alertness, particularly around the River Sutlej, where water levels had suddenly gone up earlier due to inflows from India.
The PDMA has been regularly sending advisories to farmers and residents of low-lying areas, calling on them to stay alert despite the better weather conditions.
