CALIFORNIA (Kashmir English): WhatsApp is soon going to introduce a feature under which users will be able to get the same username across different Meta apps.
Instant messaging app is going to introduce its long-discussed username feature next year, after which users will be able to contact each other through just their username without sharing their phone number.
This feature will allow users to get the same handle on WhatsApp as per their username on Facebook or Instagram, which will make it possible to maintain a consistent identity across Meta platforms.
According to reports, the messaging will also offer a reservation option through which users will be able to save their preferred username before general availability.
Verification will be required through the Meta Account Center to reserve a username. Once reserved, that particular handle will not be available to other users, thus giving clear priority to early adopters.
After the reservation period is over, all users will be able to create and get a username as per WhatsApp rules.
These rules, usernames cannot start with www, must contain at least one letter, and can only contain lowercase letters, numbers, dots, and underscores.
Usernames cannot start or end with a dot, nor can they contain domains like dot.com or dot.net, and can be between 3 and 30 characters long.
This new feature solves the long-standing problem of sharing phone numbers and will provide users with a more convenient and secure way to connect.
Popular Instagram influencers and users with strong identities on Facebook will also benefit from this, as they will now be able to maintain the same identity across all platforms.
