TEHRAN (Kashmir English): Several loud explosions were heard in Iran’s capital of Tehran on Saturday morning after Israel announced it had launched a missile attack on the country.
Initial reports indicate that several missiles have struck University Street and the Jomhouri area in the center of the capital, Fars news agency reported.
Meanwhile, the Associated Press reports that a strike in Tehran happened near the offices of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
Israel Defence Minister, Israel Katz, has said that his country has launched a ‘preemptive attack’ on Iran and declared an ‘immediate state of emergency throughout the entire country,’ The Times of Israel reported.
“The State of Israel has launched a preemptive strike against Iran to remove threats to the State of Israel,” he said in a statement.
Meanwhile, sirens sound across Israel as the IDF Home Front Command warns civilians to stay close to bomb shelters.
The message says that “due to the security situation,” civilians should ensure they know which optimal protected shelter is near them and avoid non-essential travel.
“The proactive alert is intended to prepare the public for the possibility of missile fire toward our territory,” the Israeli military said. The army says that as of now, there is no need to enter shelters.
US-Israel joint operation
Israel’s Channel 12, citing an Israeli security source, reported US and Israel conducted a joint operation to attack Iran this morning.
It cites Iranian opposition reports that the homes of Iranian leaders are being targeted. The source also said the strikes are targeting sites from which Iran could attack Israel.
Moreover, a US official told The Times of Israel that the United States participated in this morning’s strikes in Iran together with Israel.
