ISLAMABAD (Kashmir English): The capital city of Islamabad is all set to offer free internet services at public places, though users will be required to verify their identity before logging on.

The National Telecommunication Corporation (NTC) has finalised the standards for providing free Wi-Fi, as the authorities push to complete the initiative at the earliest.

Under the new initiative, anyone wishing to use free public Wi-Fi will have to enter their name and mobile phone number.

A digital record will also be maintained to log which user accessed the internet from which specific public location.

The sources said the NTC has been directed not only to provide the facility but also to enforce strict cyber-security protocol to safeguard users and public networks.

Islamabad hotspots

Under the plan, Wi-Fi hotspots will be set up across key areas of the city, including metro bus stations, central commercial districts, and other public spaces.

To speed up the rollout, NTC has accelerated work on the project and has already approached the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) and other relevant departments for coordination and technical support.

Officials said the initiative aims to enhance digital accessibility for the public, but identity verification has been made mandatory to prevent misuse and to strengthen cybersecurity across public networks.
