UNITED NATIONS (Kashmir English): The UN’s Security Council (UNSC) will meet in an emergency session on Friday at the request of Iran, Pakistan, Russia, China, and Algeria, to discuss the ongoing conflict, international media reported.
The Israeli Ambassador to the UN, Danny Dannon, said they will attend.
“Israel not only defended itself, it eliminated a major threat facing the entire free world,” he said in a statement.
The session will take place at 10:00 EDT (15:00 BST).
European-Iranian ministers meeting
Furthermore, European and Iranian ministers are meeting is last-ditch effort to contain this conflict.
According to reports, foreign ministers of France, Germany, and the UK are expected to meet their Iranian counterpart in Geneva on Friday.
The agenda of the meeting is Iran’s nuclear programme, and, more pressingly, the escalating conflict with Israel.
It appears that Tehran sees the potential of both the motivation and the leverage in Europe that usually requires in mediation in such a volatile conflict.
The experts believe that a resolution could offer a rare win-win, for both Tehran and Brussels.
Europe is clearly uneasy with the conflict dragging. A war between Iran and Israel, so soon after Brexit, the Covid pandemic, and the war in Ukraine, could prove deeply destabilising for a continent already under strain.
