Iran has officially called for an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council after an Israeli airstrike hit Iranian territory, killing several high-ranking Iranian officials and scientists. In a strong letter sent to the UN, Iran described the attack as a clear act of aggression and a violation of international law.
The Iranian mission to the United Nations demanded immediate action from the UN Security Council, stating that such military operations not only threaten Iran’s sovereignty but also risk pushing the already tense region into further conflict.
In an urgent letter to the UN Security Council, Iran has called for an emergency meeting following coordinated Israeli strikes on its nuclear infrastructure and the targeted killing of senior military officials. Amir Saeed Iravani, Iran’s Permanent Representative to the UN, submitted the letter condemning the attacks as “criminal and provocative,” and demanded immediate and decisive action from the international body.
The letter alleges that Israel, with U.S. support, launched deliberate and illegal military strikes against Iran’s civilian nuclear facilities – particularly Natanz, which operates under IAEA safeguards. Iran stated these attacks violate the UN Charter and fundamental principles of international law, and pose a grave threat to regional and global peace and security.
According to Iranian officials, the Israeli strikes killed senior military commanders and scientists, including General Gholam Ali Rashid and nuclear physicist Dr. Fereydoun Abbasi.
Iran’s UN Mission warned that such assaults not only endanger civilian lives but also risk triggering a catastrophic nuclear incident. It labelled the attacks a clear breach of the Convention on the Physical Protection of Nuclear Material and Iran’s rights under the Comprehensive Safeguards Agreement with the IAEA.
The letter further accuses Israel of state-sponsored terrorism, citing recent assassinations of senior Iranian military and nuclear figures in Tehran. Iran condemned these killings as part of a broader pattern of unlawful aggression, pointing to public admissions by Israeli officials as “confessions to international crimes.”
Invoking Article 51 of the UN Charter, Iran asserted its right to self-defense, vowing to respond “decisively, proportionately, and at a time of its choosing.” The Iranian mission warned that Israel’s actions have crossed all red lines and that the regime must bear full responsibility for the consequences of its miscalculations.
It warned that failure by the UN Security Council to respond would undermine global peace efforts and send a dangerous message to aggressor states.
