CALIFORNIA (Kashmir English): Instagram has started testing a Picture-in-Picture (PiP) feature that enables users to view reels in a small, floating window while using other apps.
According to TechCrunch, a select group of users will see a pop-up message on their screens with instructions on how to enable the feature.
PiP aims to encourage multitasking, such as replying to messages or browsing other platforms while watching reels.
The feature was first identified by app researcher Radu Oncescu while Instagram later confirmed the test to TechCrunch.
Instagram feature on YouTube and TikTok
The feature would help increase viewer retention for longer videos by allowing continuous playback in the background. PiP is already available on apps such as YouTube and TikTok.
Instagram’s decision to test the PiP feature follows earlier remarks from its head, Adam Mosseri, who had responded to a user enquiry about the feature. At the time, Mosseri said he would discuss the possibility with his team.
It remains unconfirmed whether Instagram would roll out the feature more broadly.
