MUZAFFARABAD (Kashmir English): Kashmiri leaders strongly condemned human rights violations in IIOJK, including custodial killings, torture, and arbitrary detentions, urging the international community to take action against India.

The Kashmiri leadership strongly denounced the active human rights abuses in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK) because of torture incidents, killings and arbitrary detentions. On Sunday, different leaders presented a unified message that demanded international intervention against atrocities and Indian governmental responsibility for abusive actions.

Speaking to Pakistan Television News (PTV), Sheikh Abdul Mateen, a leader of the All Parties Hurriyat Conference (APHC) Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK), emphasised the urgent need for global intervention. He described the situation in IIOJK as dire, with civilians facing brutal repression at the hands of Indian forces.

The news of twenty-five-year-old Makhan Din from Kathua district has generated widespread outrage after his demise. Media reports confirmed that police authorities in the north-western region caused his death through suicide while he suffered extreme torture during his detention. The incident was strongly condemned by Sheikh Abdul Mateen who pointed out that Kashmiris undergo significant abuse and violence at large.

Revealing a shocking statistic, he noted that since 1989, approximately 7,000 people have been killed in custody by Indian occupation forces in IIOJK. “Indian forces have unleashed a reign of terror in Kashmir, where detainees are subjected to brutal electric shocks and other inhumane treatment,” he added.

Kashmiri political figure Abdul Hameed Lone advocated that the facts about Kashmir have been extensively recorded by Amnesty International and other international rights organizations. Lone demanded both an end to the protection which India allows its forces and immediate justice for the deceased families and their murder victims.

Recently, President Azad Kashmir Barrister Sultan Mahmood Chaudhry, while addressing a reception in New York, urged Kashmiris in the United States (US) to intensify efforts for global awareness on resolving the Kashmir issue, condemning India’s military presence in IIOJK and calling for international intervention.
