ISLAMABAD (Kashmir English): The Human Rights lawyer Imaan Mazari, along with her husband Hadi Chatha, have been arrested from Serena Chowk, Islamabad.
Mazari and her Husband were arrested when they were on their way to the district and sessions court in Islamabad from the Islamabad High Court (IHC) Bar. The National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA) filed an FIR against Imaan Zainab Mazari and Advocate Hadi Ali Chattha through document number 234/2025, which they registered on August 22 2025.
The charges relate to controversial social media posts by Mazari (with Chattha accused of reposting), which supported the banned group Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA), spread hatred, promoted ethnic divisions, incited fear, falsely portrayed state institutions as involved in terrorism, and disseminated fake information.
The accused were initially not arrested and received pre-arrest bail. The trial court conducted a total of 44 hearings which it scheduled over five months, because it needed to call 104 times.
The accused reportedly remained absent 53 times, leading to seven instances of non-bailable arrest warrants being issued (later recalled multiple times). The court showed considerable patience, but prosecutors said that the repeated non-appearances and alleged media statements mocking the process deliberately delayed justice and insulted the court.
The trial court revoked their bail because the defendants continued to miss court appearances, which resulted in new non-bailable arrest warrants being issued against them.
The prosecutors want to determine if the defendant’s actions constitute both willful contempt of court and attempts to disrupt the judiciary while purposefully delaying justice. The prosecutors showed that common defendants fail to get this level of consideration.
