ISLAMABAD (Kashmir English): The National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) has issued clarification for those individuals who want to update their marital status and get the name of an ex-spouse removed from their Computerized National Identity Card (CNIC).
As per NADRA, individuals are allowed to alter their marital status from “Married” to “Divorced” in its records if the necessary legal paperwork has been completed.
To update the document, one has to start by getting the khula or divorce certificate from the family court or the arbitration council. Then, the person has to visit the Union Council where the marriage was registered.
To accomplish this, applicants are required to visit the Union Council office and submit an application for the provision of the divorce certificate, along with other required specifications such as the names of both individuals, the date of divorce, the case number, reproduction of the CNICs, and witnesses. After that is done, the divorce certificate can be collected from the UC office.
The explanation was issued by NADRA in response to a question posted on social media, where a member of the public stated that, despite acquiring a divorce certificate from the Union Council, under NADRA, his former wife was still shown to be his wife.
