Heavy rain, snowfall expected during week: PMD

ISLAMABAD (Kashmir English): The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD)  has issued a new forecast of rain, wind, thunderstorms, and snowfall in different parts of the country from the middle of next week.

According to the Meteorological Department, a weak westerly wind system will enter the upper parts of the country from today and will remain effective until January 19. After this, this system will become stronger from January 20 and may engulf most parts of the country from January 21.

The Meteorological Department says that intermittent rain, wind, and light snowfall may occur in different parts of Gilgit-Baltistan, Kashmir, and upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa from this evening to January 19. Similarly, light rain and snowfall are likely in Murree, Galiyat, and adjacent areas from January 18 to 20.

It has been further informed that during January 20 to 23, heavy rain, wind, and thunderstorms may occur in Gilgit-Baltistan, Kashmir, Murree, Galiat, Islamabad, Pothohar region, as well as several districts of Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. During this time, heavy snowfall is expected in many mountainous areas, including Chitral, Dir, Swat, Kalam, Shangla, Kohistan, Mansehra, Abbottabad, Murree, and Neelum Valley.

According to the Meteorological Department, thundershowers are expected in different areas of Balochistan on January 21 and 22, while heavy snowfall may also occur in the upper areas of the province. Rain and thunderstorms have been predicted in several districts of Sindh on January 22 and 23.

The Meteorological Department has warned that there is a risk of road closures, slippage, and landslides in mountainous areas due to heavy snowfall. Therefore, tourists should avoid unnecessary travel and take precautionary measures.
