IMPHAL, India (Kashmir English): Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi made his first visit to Manipur after a two-year hiatus, but his visit was met with public backlash and strong protests.

The city experienced a strike, and “Go Back Modi” slogans were chanted at various locations.

In view of the Indian Prime Minister’s visit, the administration had converted the entire area into a military cantonment.

Strict security measures were implemented, drone surveillance, imposition of curfew, and checkpoints everywhere made the lives of ordinary citizens miserable.

The local population had called for peaceful protests and a strike, terming Modi’s visit an electoral show.

Protesters stated that the Prime Minister could remember only after two years that Manipur is also a part of India.

According to them, Modi’s arrival was for political interests rather than to heal wounds.

Students of Manipur University also protested against the Prime Minister and chanted slogans on campus.

Students and ordinary citizens rejected the BJP’s development announcements, saying that these were merely attempts to gain a vote bank.

During the protest, police fired rubber bullets and used tear gas on peaceful citizens, resulting in multiple injuries.

Hospitals were filled with injured people, and the condition of several protesters is reported to be critical.

According to media reports, journalists were prevented from coverage, and attempts were made to hide facts by imposing restrictions on the media.

It is worth noting that Manipur is still facing unrest and distrust after the ethnic riots in 2023.

The United Nations’ 2025 report also severely criticized the Indian government, stating that violence against minorities, forced evictions, and serious human rights violations continue in Manipur.
