ISLAMABAD (Kashmir English): The Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SPARCO) has confirmed that the first supermoon of 2026 will be visible in Pakistan on the nights of January 3 and 4.

According to a statement issued by SPARCO, this full moon, also known as the Wolf Moon, occurs when the moon is at its closest point to the Earth, due to which it appears 14 percent larger and about 30 percent brighter than a normal full moon.

SPARCO said that the supermoon in Pakistan will rise at 5:51 PM on January 3, the illumination will be 99.8 percent, and it will be visible all night on the nights of January 3 and 4.

The Wolf Moon is usually the first full moon of the year and is named after the howling of wolves on winter nights.

In 2026, it will be considered a supermoon because it will be at its closest point to the Earth, which will significantly increase its brightness and volume.

According to the Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission, the best viewing times are around the time of the moon’s rise and fall, near the time of sunrise and sunset.

During this time, the Coordinates Meter Shower will also be at its peak, which will be of further interest to astronomy enthusiasts.

It should be noted that supermoons usually occur in three to four consecutive occasions. The next supermoon is likely to begin in November 2026 after the end of the current cycle.
