ISLAMABAD (Kashmir English): In a groundbreaking move, the Ministry of Defense has issued a notification for the appointment of Field Marshal Asim Munir as Pakistan’s first-ever Chief of Defense Forces

According to the notification, Air Chief Marshal Zaheer Ahmed Babar Sidhu has also received an extension in his services.

Earlier, President Asif Ali Zardari approved the appointment of Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir as Pakistan’s first Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) in a major restructuring of the country’s top military leadership under the 27th Constitutional Amendment.

In a statement released by the Presidency, the president also approved a two-year extension in the tenure of Air Chief Marshal (ACM) Zaheer Ahmed Babar Sidhu, extending his service beyond March 2026. President Zardari extended his “best wishes” to both officers as they embark on their increased responsibilities.

The CDF post, recently created, replaces the now-abolished post of the Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee (CJCSC), which formally ceased to exist on November 27.

In the revised constitutional setup, the office of the CDF would be ‘dual-hatted’, held concurrently with the COAS role. Field Marshal Munir would be holding both the posts simultaneously for five years, confirmed the PM Office.
