Federal govt soon to announce 5G spectrum policy: IT Minister

ISLAMABAD (Kashmir English): Federal Minister for Information Technology Shaza Fatima has said that the government will soon announce the 5G spectrum policy.

Addressing the 26th meeting of the South Asian Telecommunication Regulators Council in Islamabad, she said that Pakistan will auction more than 600 MHz of 5G spectrum policy, which will not only improve the existing 3G and 4G services but will also introduce 5G technology in the country.

She said that the Telecom Infrastructure Sharing Framework has been approved while the regulations for satellite communication have also been finalized, through which the facility of satellite internet will be available in the country.

Shaza Fatima said that the government is committed to ensuring digital access for every citizen. In this regard, the ‘Smartphone for All’ policy is being finalized to make mobile devices more affordable and accessible.

Highlighting Pakistan’s digital development, he said that the number of mobile users in the country has reached 200 million while the number of mobile broadband users has reached 150 million.

In the last 5 years, data traffic has increased by 70 percent while the revenue of the telecom sector has recorded an annual increase of 17 percent.

The minister further said that the volume of e-commerce in the country has reached 7.7 billion dollars and it will cross 10 billion dollars next year.
