ISLAMABAD (Kashmir English): An increase of Rs 2.52 per unit in electricity prices is expected for consumers across the country. The Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA) has filed a request with NEPRA seeking this hike.
Three weeks ago, NEPRA had raised electricity prices by Rs 0.52 per unit under a quarterly adjustment—imposing an additional burden of approximately Rs 12.67 billion on consumers—while the rate had previously been increased by Rs 0.75 per unit nationwide in August.
The CPPA filed the current request regarding the monthly fuel price adjustment for July; the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) is scheduled to hear the petition today.
The CPPA’s petition states that during July, 39.81% of electricity was generated from hydropower, 14.34% from imported coal, 10.91% from local coal, and 10.78% from imported gas.
According to the CPPA, 14.464 billion units of electricity were supplied to DISCOs (Distribution Companies) in August, for Rs 8.82 per unit. During the hearing, NEPRA will review the CPPA’s request, the cost of electricity generation, and other relevant data.
If the Authority approves the request, the financial burden of the additional cost will be passed on to electricity consumers. Following NEPRA’s approval of the CPPA’s request, electricity consumers across the country are likely to face an additional financial burden of Rs 29.5 billion.
