Construction of Three new hydropower projects in Azad Kashmir approved

MUZAFFARABAD: The Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) government has given administrative approval for the construction of three new hydropower projects in Azad Kashmir.

Separate notifications issued by the Department of Energy and Water Resources said that these projects were approved by the Central Development Working Party (CDWP) in its meeting held on October 10, 2025.

The approved projects include the 2.71 MW Khurshidabad Hydropower Project in Haveli district, the 3.0 MW Phulawi Hydropower Project in Neelum district and the 1.95 MW Nowshera Hydropower Project in Muzaffarabad.

The notification states that the total approved cost of the Khursheedabad Hydropower Project is Rs 1271.2 million, while Rs 1089.4 million has been fixed for the Phalwai Hydropower Project and Rs 1058.8 million for the Nowshera Hydropower Project.

The notification further states that the Power Development Organization will consult with the Electricity Department to finalize the electricity distribution mechanism (T&D network) as well as the tariff mechanism for the sustainability of the project.

According to the notification, the Khursheedabad and Nowshera Hydropower Projects will be implemented in 36 months (July 2028).

The government has set a timeline of 48 months (July 2029) for the implementation of the Phalwai Hydropower Project in Neelum.
