ISLAMABAD (Kashmir English): The government has rejected claims of a prolonged communications blackout involving former Prime Minister Imran Khan, saying prison records cited by officials present a different picture from the allegations aired in international media.’
According to the government, Imran Khan has held 198 meetings involving more than 900 visitors, including family members, lawyers and political representatives. Officials said he is also permitted regular meetings with his wife, with the latest meeting reportedly taking place on August 4, 2026.
The government further claimed that prison records document WhatsApp and landline communication between Imran Khan and family members in Pakistan and abroad. Officials cited a call with his son on March 21, 2026, while arguing that regulated prison communication should not be characterized as a complete communications blackout.
Officials also rejected allegations that Imran Khan has been denied adequate medical treatment. According to the records presented by the government, he has undergone around 30 specialist examinations and medical board assessments, in addition to medical checks by the prison doctor three times a day.
The government said his medical care included retinal imaging and five intravitreal anti-VEGF injections for his eye condition, with specialist assessments continuing into July 2026.
Officials also pointed out that the disclosure of Imran Khan’s confidential medical reports is currently before the Supreme Court, arguing that the ongoing judicial process and medical confidentiality should be distinguished from allegations of deliberate concealment.
Regarding claims concerning visits by Imran Khan’s sons, the government said valid NICOP holders do not require Pakistani visas to enter the country, and therefore the issue should be considered in the context of NICOP and administrative procedures.
The government also disputed descriptions of Imran Khan’s prison conditions as severe isolation, saying he has been provided an exclusive seven-cell compound, a lawn, exercise facilities and separately prepared meals.
Officials maintained that CNN and other international media outlets have the right to question the government and scrutinize Imran Khan’s detention conditions. However, they argued that political allegations should be assessed alongside official prison, medical and visitation records.
The government said the figures cited in its response, 98 meetings, more than 900 visitors, regular spousal access, documented family calls, around 30 specialist assessments and five eye injections should be considered when evaluating claims of a complete communications and medical-access blackout.
