MUZAFFARABAD (Kashmir English): The 9th martyrdom anniversary of Burhan Wani, a key figure in the Kashmiri freedom movement, will be observed on July 8 as “Kashmir Resistance Day.” The day will be marked with events, rallies, and tributes across Azad Kashmir to honor the legacy of the martyred commander.

Burhan Wani, who became the face of the resistance in Occupied Kashmir, was killed by Indian forces in 2016. His death sparked widespread protests and revived the spirit of freedom among Kashmiri youth. Since then, every year on July 8, his martyrdom is remembered with deep respect and commitment to the cause of Kashmir’s freedom.

According to Pasban-e-Hurriyat Jammu and Kashmir, a well-organized unit of 313 youth will offer a special salute to Shaheed Burhan Wani and other martyrs of Kashmir in the capital, Muzaffarabad. On this occasion, young participants will take part in a symbolic run titled “Run for Freedom” from Shaheed Afzal Guru Chowk to Shaheed Burhan Wani Chowk, aiming to reignite the spirit of the freedom struggle.

Pasban-e-Hurriyat Jammu and Kashmir, the organization behind the events, stated that ceremonies will begin early in the morning, with youth offering salutes to the national flag while patriotic songs play in the background.

Chairman Uzair Ahmad Ghazali emphasized the role of Burhan Wani in exposing Indian oppression through the power of social media. He said that Wani’s leadership and sacrifice inspired thousands of young Kashmiris to stand up against Indian military control.

“His courage and message of resistance still live on,” said Ghazali. “Burhan Wani is now a symbol of bravery and sacrifice for the people of Kashmir.”

Pasban-e-Hurriyat has also urged the Azad Kashmir government to officially declare July 8 as Kashmir Resistance Day at the national level, as the group has been observing it under this name for the past nine years.
