MUZAFFARABAD (Kashmir English): An Islamabad Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) on Tuesday, February 5th, handed over a death sentence to Shahzeb alias Zebi, the main accused in the murder of former Kashmiri commander Bashir Ahmed Wani.
ATC Judge, Tahir Abbas Sipra announced the verdict after hearing the case related to Wani’s assassination. The former Kashmiri commander was reported to be shot dead on the outskirts of Islamabad in Burma Town in 2023. Subsequently, six people were detained by the Counter Terrorism Department (CTD) Police and put behind bars under several sections, which include anti-terrorism and murder charges.
Moez Ahmed and Faizan Kayani were given 40 years and 9 months of imprisonment. Mehran Younis, Nauman Sattar, and Arsalan Wajid were given 35 years and 9 months of imprisonment. The court also proved that the accused had received funding from the Indian intelligence agency Research and Analysis Wing (RAW) for acts of terrorism.
Prosecuting Attorney Raja Naveed produced enough evidence against all the accused, including the fact that Shahzeb Zebi, Moez Ahmed, and Faizan Kayani received funding from RAW for terrorist operations. Documentary evidence was also produced to support this case, further aiding in the decision-making. Before this, SIU of Sindh Police arrested a RAW suspect from the Mauripur area in Karachi.
SSP Shoaib Memon of Karachi stated that the accused was Muhammad Saleem who belonged to RAW, and he was apprehended near Fish Chowrangi on Manora Road, Karachi.
According to the authorities, a hand grenade, bomb, launcher, and pistol were recovered along with service cards from various departments from Saleem.
SSP Memon disclosed that the accused had passports and identity cards under different names to avoid security agencies. Besides, maps of Manora and China Port were recovered from his possession.
Bashir Ahmed Wani’s murder
In February 2023, unknown motorbike riders in Burma Town shot Wani, also known as Imtiaz Alam. Wani was shot dead on the outskirts of Islamabad. He was a former Kashmiri leader
Wani was close to Syed Salahuddin, the leader of Hizbul Mujahideen, and a senior commander of his group.
