All-Pakistan memorial football tournament opens in Mirpur

MIRPUR (Kashmir English): The All-Pakistan Akhtar Ali Siddique and Chaudhry Muhammad Riaz Memorial Football Tournament opened at the Government Postgraduate College ground here on Monday.

At least 16 district-level teams from Azad Jammu and Kashmir and various parts of the country are participating in the tournament, organized by Youth Football Club Mirpur.

The inaugural match was played between Kotli District and Al-Zaki Football Club Gujarat, which Gujarat won by two goals to one.

Azad Kashmir Minister for Higher Education Zafar Iqbal Malik formally inaugurated the tournament being chief guest.

Earlier, the Minister, along with former Advocate General Raja Inamullah Khan, were warmly welcomed by the tournament organizers.

The minister was introduced to the players. Later, he formally inaugurated the event by kicking the ball. The tournament organizers have decorated the ground beautifully by putting up various banners and stalls.

Football fans

A large number of football fans were present to watch the opening match. Minister for Higher Education Zafar Iqbal Malik, while praising the efforts of the tournament organizers in great words, said that the competitions organized by the Youth Football Club brought together players from Azad Jammu Kashmir and Pakistan which will promote healthy activities.

He said that the young generation was bright future of the country.

The minister said the government of Azad Jammu and Kashmir was taking steps to improve the quality of education in Azad Jammu Kashmir and promoting sports to develop the physical abilities of the younger generation.

He said that the grounds of colleges across Azad Kashmir will be upgraded so that players can be provided opportunities for playing games.
