AJK weather: Strong winds, thundershowers expected across region

MUZAFFRABAD (Kashmir English): The residents of Azad Kashmir are set to experience strong winds, thundershowers as the monsoon season is in full swing.

Isolated rainfall is expected in Astore, Skardu, Hunza, Shighar, Bagh, Neelum Valley, Muzaffarabad, Haveli, and surrounding areas from the 25th of June to the 1st of July, 2025.

Thunderstorms continue to occur in different parts of the country, while the Meteorological Department and related agencies have issued alerts in view of the threat of heavy rains and possible floods in the next 48 hours.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has also issued instructions for immediate measures to deal with the emergency.

According to the Meteorological Department, rain is likely in most parts of the country today, including Islamabad and northeastern Punjab. During this, thunderstorms, strong winds, and heavy rains have been predicted, which may cause flooding in some areas.

According to the Punjab Disaster Management Authority (PDMA), there is a risk of flooding due to rain in many cities of the province. In this regard, citizens have been advised to be cautious while issuing alerts. Heavy rains have also been predicted in various districts of Sindh, including Karachi, Hyderabad, Badin, Thatta, Sujawal, Ghotki, and Tharparkar.

Meanwhile, strong winds and rains have also been reported in various areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Azad Kashmir, and Gilgit-Baltistan, while there is a risk of a flood situation due to melting glaciers in Gilgit-Baltistan.

Seeing the seriousness of the situation, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif telephoned the Chairman National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA).

The Prime Minister directed that communication with district administrations, rescue agencies, and provincial governments across the country, especially in the upper areas, be made more effective. The system of giving advance notice to citizens through mobile messages has also been instructed to be activated immediately.

The NDMA has also directed all relevant institutions to remain alert and be ready to deal with any emergency.
