MUZAFFARABAD (Kashmir English): The University of Azad Jammu and Kashmir (UAJK), Muzaffarabad, has “categorically denied” reports circulating on social media regarding an increase in fees and suspended teaching activities.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the university spokesperson termed the reports regarding a 60% increase in student fees completely “false and baseless”.
To ensure the safety and security of students, faculty, and staff, the university spokesperson said that teaching activities have been suspended until further notice.
The clarification came after the students’ protest entered its second day at the UAJK’s Chella campus against an increase in fees, lack of educational facilities, poor transport, and administrative indifference.
The situation turned violent today after some individuals opened direct fire on peaceful protestors, injuring one student. Sources said that the miscreants also opened fire on a police mobile.
Talking to the reporters, SSP Muzaffarabad said that the exchange of fire between the students was held today for the third time in a week.
Denying the claims of a fee increase, the UAJK spokesperson said that only a 10% annual increase is applicable to all ongoing programs as per university regulations.
“The proposed Rs 1,000 adjustment in transport fee, which was yet to be approved by the Academic Council and Syndicate, has also been withdrawn immediately,” the spokesperson confirmed.
Furthermore, the statement strongly “condemned” the recent acts of violence and has requested the district administration and law enforcement agencies to take strict legal action against those responsible.
