ISLAMABAD (Kashmir English): President Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK), Barrister Sultan Mahmood Chaudhry, has called on the European Union (EU) to appoint its representative on the Kashmir issue to help resolve the longstanding dispute peacefully.
Chaudhry expressed these remarks during a meeting with Austrian Ambassador Andrea Wicki at Kashmir House in Islamabad, according to a press release issued by President Office said.
He said that the European countries should play a practical role in resolving this long-standing dispute at the individual level, especially Austria, which has an excellent record in protecting human rights, should intensify efforts to stop the ongoing human rights violations in occupied Kashmir and resolve the issue.
“Both Pakistan and India are nuclear powers and any minor or major incident between them can lead to a serious war,” he asserted.
Stressing the need for early resolution of the lingering dispute, Barrister Sultan said that the Kashmir dispute could be the tinderbox and a flash point for a nuclear conflagration.
The AJK president said that Austria having an excellent track record on human rights can play an important role to stop ongoing human rights violations in occupied Kashmir.
The President of Azad Kashmir further said that India has increased serious human rights violations in occupied Kashmir since August 5, 2019.
Therefore, the international community should play its effective role in ending human rights violations in occupied Kashmir and achieving a just solution to the Kashmir issue, he added.
