ISLAMABAD (Kashmir English): The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has approved $48 million in additional financing for water resources development in Pakistan, which will help hasten the delayed components of the Balochistan Water Resources Development Sector Project.
This financing will help further key work in the Churi Infiltration Gallery, Siri Toi Dam command area, and watershed management activities.
ADB added that the new support would improve irrigation efficiency, promote sustainable water use, and reduce soil erosion from flooding. A piped water distribution system in the Siri Toi command area will replace open channels to minimize water loss and improve distribution.
This financing builds upon previous achievements related to enhancing irrigation networks and the management of water resources in Balochistan, a province facing severe water shortages, economic difficulties, and pressure from the climate.
Agriculture continues to occupy the central position in the economy of Balochistan, contributing nearly two-thirds of its output and giving employment to most of its population. However, recurring droughts and poor water management have placed livelihoods at risk, with poverty levels almost double the national average.
ADB Country Director for Pakistan Emma Fan said the project focuses on the river basins of Zhob and Mula, aiming at better economic opportunities, particularly for women working in agriculture.
Once completed, the Siri Toi Dam will store 36 million cubic meters of water, thus assuring a more reliable supply for domestic and agricultural use across 16,592 hectares of area under rain-fed farming.
Long-term sustainability is protected through afforestation, soil conservation, and small check dams included in the project to limit land degradation and improve flood management in the catchment area.
The project is also supported by the Japan Fund for Prosperous and Resilient Asia and the Pacific and the High-Level Technology Fund.
