MIRPUR (Kashmir English): Professor Amir Iqbal, a resident of Samahni Mirpur, has denied allegations of harassment made against him by a British-origin Kashmiri woman, Yasmin.

A day earlier, British-Kashmiri woman Yasmin alleged that a person named Aamir Iqbal rented her house and after two months occupied her property with the help of the Mirpur municipality and development authority.

Addressing a press conference at the Kashmir Press Club Mirpur, Professor Iqbal termed the allegations as “fabricated” and part of a “well-planned conspiracy” to assassinate his character. He claimed that the house in question was vacated on February 3 in the presence of the Thothal police station officials and that he had been falsely accused.

Professor Iqbal revealed that he had received calls from unknown individuals, including Faizan Ramzan and Naghman Arif, who demanded that he vacate the house and pay money to cancel a press conference. He alleged that this was an attempt to blackmail him.

The professor claimed that the house was rented through a property dealer and that he had given a security deposit of eighty thousand rupees. He also produced messages from Yasmin, in which she praised him and his family as good tenants.

Iqbal further added that the meter there was faulty, which he kept getting fixed for a month.

“After he left, the electricity department took the faulty meter and took it away and kept giving me an average bill, on which the electricity offices pushed him and with great difficulty got the meter changed, which is still in the name of landlord Yasmin.”

Professor Iqbal demanded that Commissioner Mirpur conduct an inquiry into the incident and clear his name. He alleged that some individuals were involved in an organized conspiracy to defame him and create a wrong image of the region, which would deter foreigners from visiting.
