ISLAMABAD (Kashmir English): Spanish newspaper El País has described Chief of Army Staff (COAS) and Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) Field Marshal Asim Munir as a central figure in ongoing diplomatic efforts aimed at easing tensions between the United States and Iran.

In the detailed report titled “Asim Munir, the Pakistani field marshal negotiating peace between the United States and Iran,” journalist Guillermo Abril stated that Pakistan has emerged as an “unexpected mediator” in the crisis, with Asim Munir playing a key role in maintaining communication between Washington and Tehran.

The report highlighted former US President Donald Trump’s remarks acknowledging Pakistan’s efforts, claiming that the ceasefire extension between the US and Iran came after requests from Field Marshal Asim Munir and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.

According to the article, Munir’s military and intelligence background, combined with his ties with regional capitals including Tehran, Riyadh, and Washington, has positioned him as one of the few leaders able to communicate directly with all sides involved.

The report also discussed Munir’s meetings with senior Iranian leadership during his visit to Tehran, including Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, where he reportedly emphasized dialogue and regional stability.

El País further stated that Pakistan’s diplomatic role has gained international attention following tensions in the Middle East and the 2025 conflict between Pakistan and India. The article claimed that Munir’s influence increased significantly after the conflict, eventually leading to his promotion to the rank of Field Marshal.

The report also touched upon Pakistan-US engagements, including discussions on trade, economic cooperation, and regional security, while noting concerns raised by some analysts regarding the growing influence of the military in Pakistan’s governance and foreign policy.

Analysts quoted in the article said Pakistan’s primary objective remains maintaining dialogue between Tehran and Washington to prevent further escalation in the region.
