NEW YORK (Kashmir English): WhatsApp is developing a new privacy feature that will allow messages to disappear after they are read, giving users greater control over their conversations.
The new update will introduce the ‘after reading’ feature that gives users the option to delete messages after reading. Currently, there are three preset options for setting the timer for disappearing messages: 24 hours, seven days, or 90 days.
The problem with the current system is that it starts counting from when the message was sent, regardless of whether it has been read or not.
This new functionality was found in an Android beta version of WhatsApp. Instead of starting the deletion process right after the message was sent, it will start counting only after the recipient has read the message.
Users who use this innovative feature may be offered different ways of how long after reading the message it should disappear. Users may select either five minutes, one hour, or twelve hours.
At this point, it is unclear whether this feature will work individually on every chat or be used generally.
Moreover, the platform is also working towards developing its user interface for distinguishing the regular timers from the new read timers.
Once activated, the message will be visible till it is opened, and upon that, the timer will start. For example, if there is a timer of five minutes, then the message will be deleted five minutes after being opened.
This new feature is still being developed, and once completed, it will be tested by the beta testers first and then will be released globally.
WhatsApp Web to offer 50 new desktop theme options
WhatsApp Web may soon offer its users nearly 50 new desktop themes to enhance the cross-platform messaging experience.
As a desktop extension of the mobile app, WhatsApp Web has traditionally received fewer updates.
However, WABetaInfo reports that Meta is developing 49 new themes that will be available for users to customize their experience while using WhatsApp Web.
Mobile users have enjoyed customization options like chat backgrounds and colours for years.
In contrast, the desktop app has limited controls; it introduced dark mode a few years ago, but overall, customization options remain minimal.
WhatsApp a Chromium-based wrapper
WhatsApp Web is essentially a Chromium-based wrapper that can be used across various platforms, including Android tablets.
It enables users to make calls, send and receive messages, and more; they pair it with a WhatsApp account.
As a way to stay connected across devices, it’s a great option and works in tandem with the companion mode, which allows users to send and receive messages on a secondary mobile device.
According to WABetaInfo, the ability to change the message bubble colour will consequently allow users to modify the chat view’s background or wallpaper.
According to the report, currently, there are 49 variations in testing, including the default theme. With the introduction of the default light theme, the total technically reaches 50; however, this is a stretch.
