NEW YORK (Kashmir English): A woman gave birth to a child aboard a flight travelling from the Caribbean state of Jamaica to the American city of New York with question of his nationality still unclear.
The Caribbean Airlines flight departed from Kingston for John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York.
According to a statement issued by the airline, an emergency arose during the journey; however, the situation remained under control and the woman safely delivered the baby.
Upon landing at New York airport, a medical team examined the mother and child and provided the necessary care.
According to media reports, the newborn is a boy, however, the question of his nationality remains unclear.
There were no immediate details available regarding the parents and the aircraft’s exact position at the time of the birth.
The mid-flight delivery
Some reports however suggest that the mid-flight delivery of the healthy baby occurred near landing.
If either parent is an American citizen, the child will be entitled to United States nationality.
Even if the parents are not American, United States law provides that a child born aboard an aircraft flying within American airspace is entitled to American citizenship.
