MUZAFFARABAD (Kashmir English): Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) Election Commission has restored the AJK Legislative Assembly membership of Muhammad Akmal Sargala and Ghulam Mohiuddin Dewan.
Last Wednesday, the election commission suspended the membership of three MLAs, including Akmal Sargala, Ghulam Mohiuddin, and Muhammad Iqbal, for not submitting their annual assets.
According to the press release issued by the ECP, “the assembly membership of Muhammad Akmal Sargala (LA-37 Jammu-4), Ghulam Mohiuddin Dewan (LA-41 Valley 2), and Muhammad Iqbal (Reserved Seat for Overseas Pakistanis) has been suspended.”
However, in a notification issued on Thursday, the commission has notified that the two members – Akmal Sargala and Ghulam Mohiuddin – have now filed the statements of assets and liabilities and have fulfilled the legal requirement.
“Now, therefore, in pursuance of the aforesaid provisions of law and in exercise of all other powers enabling it in that behalf, the Azad Jammu and Kashmir Election Commission is pleased to restore the membership of the Azad Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly of the aforesaid persons, in consequence of compliance with law,” the notification stated.
The ECP said, “The sub-section (4) of Section 78 of the Azad Jammu and Kashmir Elections Act 2020 provides that every member of the AJK Legislative Assembly shall submit to the Commission, on or before 31 December of each year, a copy of his statement of assets and liabilities including assets and liabilities of his spouse and dependent children as on the preceding thirtieth day of June on prescribed Form,” it added.
In an earlier press release, the election commission spokespserson said that the commission issued reminders to all the members of the Assembly to submit the details of their annual assets on January 5, 2026, and February 24, 2026, in any case, otherwise their membership will be suspended under the law.
“The membership of the Members of Assembly will remain suspended until they submit the details of their assets for the financial year 2025-2024 to the Election Commission,” the ECP press release stated.
