Justice (R) Yar Muhammad Appointed Caretaker CM Gilgit-Baltistan

GILGIT (Kashmir English): Justice (R) Yar Muhammad Khan has been appointed caretaker Chief Minister of Gilgit-Baltistan as the elected government completed its 5-year constitutional term at midnight on Monday.

According to a notification issued with the approval of Prime Minister Mian Shehbaz Sharif, Justice (R) Yar Muhammad Khan’s appointment has been made under Article 48 A (2) of the government of Gilgit-Baltistan order, 2018.

Justice (R) Yar Muhammad Khan belongs to Astore district and has previously served in high judicial positions.

The 5-year term of the Gilgit-Baltistan government ended at 12 AM Monday night, after which the caretaker government has taken over affairs of the region.

Next general elections to Gilgit-Baltistan Assembly

The caretaker setup will remain in place until the next general elections to the Gilgit-Baltistan Assembly.

On the other hand, the Law and Prosecution Department of the Government of Gilgit-Baltistan issued a notification, according to which ministers, advisors, coordinators, and special assistants to the Chief Minister in Gilgit-Baltistan have been de-notified.

A notification was issued under the provisions related to the caretaker government. This notification will be effective from 12 AM on November 24, 2025.

According to the notification, this decision was made under the Gilgit-Baltistan Assembly Secretariat’s memorandum and Clause 56(5) of the Gilgit-Baltistan Governance Reforms 2019, which was enforced in the region through the Gilgit-Baltistan (Elections and Caretaker Government) Amendment Order 2020.

The statement said that under the aforementioned laws, the positions of all ministers, advisors, coordinators, special assistants, and parliamentary secretaries to the Chief Minister have ceased to exist. This order is signed by Sajjad Haider, Secretary Law and Prosecution Gilgit-Baltistan.

Following this notification, the administrative structure for the caretaker setup in Gilgit-Baltistan has been paved, and all individuals holding relevant positions will be considered relieved of their duties as of Monday.
