NEW DELHI (Kashmir English): Shubman Gill has emerged as front-runner for India’s One-Day International (ODI) captaincy, according to Indian media reports.

The 25-year-old opener, who impressed with both bat and leadership during India’s recent 2-2 Test series draw against England, is being tipped as the likely successor to Rohit Sharma as India’s ODI captain.

The Test series performance has reportedly strengthened his credentials for the 50-over role.

A leading Indian newspaper reported that Gill’s steady form and authority on the field are said to have placed him ahead of other contenders for the job.

BCCI is likely to delay a decision about the captaincy until the futures of Sharma and fellow veteran Virat Kohli in 50-over format are confirmed.

Both Sharma and Virat Kohli, key figures in Indian cricket for over a decade now, have already retired from Test and T20 international careers.

Both the legends stepped away from Tests in May, after the duo retired from T20Is last year following India’s triumph at the 2024 ICC T20 World Cup.

Both are still active in ODIs but are widely expected to end their careers in the format after featuring in the upcoming home series against Australia in October.

2027 ODI World Cup

Reports suggest the Indian cricket board does not see the pair as central to plans for the 2027 ICC ODI World Cup.
