JEDDAH, Saudi Arabia (Kashmir English): Saudi Arabian club Al-Ahli have reportedly entered into talks with representatives of Lionel Messi in a bid to bring the Argentine forward to the Saudi Pro League once his current deal with Inter Miami expires at the end of December.
Messi joined Major League Soccer in the summer of 2023 after leaving Paris Saint-Germain, turning down an earlier offer from Saudi Arabia.
Al-Ahle’s interest in Messi
Despite that initial rejection, Saudi Arabia’s interest in the 38-year-old forward remained intact.
Al-Ahli are said to be renewing efforts to land the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner, French outlet L’Équipe has reported.
While financial terms of the potential move remain hidden, Al-Ahle, who recently won the Asian Champions League, are reportedly prepared to offer a handsome package.
Saudi nation is set to host the FIFA World Cup in 2034, and is continuing its campaign to attract global football icons to up the profile of its domestic league.
On the other side, Inter Miami would also be keen to extend Messi’s stay following his impactful stint in the MLS.
The club’s ownership and fan base see the super star as central to their ongoing sporting and commercial growth, though they now face renewed competition.
Veteran sports journalist Fabrizio Romano had reported last week that Inter Miami also are set to open talks with Messi over a new contract soon.
The development comes weeks after Inter Miami were knocked out of the inaugural FIFA Club World Cup, losing to Messi’s former side Paris Saint-Germain in the group stage.
Messi’s recent performances have kept his future a topic of international interest.
Both Messi’s camp and Al-Ahle representatives have yet to comment publicly on the discussions.
