4,155 villages submerged in Punjab floods, death toll rises to 56

LAHORE (Kashmir English): Director General Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) Punjab, Irfan Ali Kathia, says that 25 districts and 4155 villages have been affected by the ongoing Punjab floods.

While talking to the media in Lahore, DG PDMA Irfan Ali Kathia said that the number of deaths in various accidents due to floods in Punjab since August 26 has reached 56.

At least sixty to seventy thousand people are staying in relief camps and are being provided with facilities. Around 500 medical camps have been set up, while 2 lakh people have been treated.

Flood situation in the rivers

Talking about the river situation, Irfan Ali Kathia said that the water flow in the three rivers of Punjab is decreasing.

Today, there are 65,000 cusecs of water in the Ravi at Jasar. Currently, 543,000 cusecs of water are flowing through the Trimams.

In the next few hours, the water level is likely to increase to about 600,000 cusecs. On the other hand, the water level in Head Muhammad Wala is low, while the water level in Head Panjnad is increasing rapidly.

Flood situation in different districts of Punjab

Talking about the flood situation in different districts, the DG PDMA said that Rescue 1122 has made a total of 25,000 boat trips. The biggest rescue operation in the history of Punjab is being carried out.

He said that the same flood situation is likely to persist in Multan for the next 72 hours; keeping this in mind, rescue operations are underway in Multan.

Sialkot, Narowal, Hafizabad and Chiniot are now moving towards restoration, while flood conditions will continue in Khanewal, Jhang, and Toba Tek Singh.

Difficulties in rescue operations

According to the DG PDMA, heavy rain was recorded in some places in Punjab. Due to the rain continuing in Gujarat, there was a situation of severe urban flooding.

At present, the main highways in Gujarat have been completely cleared, there are difficulties in the drainage process due to rain in Gujarat.

Heavy rain in Punjab

Heavy stormy rains are likely in most districts of Punjab in the next 24 hours.

According to PDMA Punjab, the 10th spell of monsoon rains will continue till September 9.

The PDMA said that under this spell, heavy rains are likely to occur in most districts of the province in 24 hours.

The Provincial Disaster Management Authority also said that rains are likely in Rawalpindi, Murree, Galiat, Attock, Chakwal, Jhelum, while rains are also likely in Gujranwala, Lahore, Gujrat and Sialkot, Narowal, Hafizabad, Mandi Bahauddin, and Okara.

In addition, rains are also expected in Sahiwal, Kasur, Jhang, Sargodha, Mianwali, Dera Ghazi Khan, Multan, and Rajanpur.
