38 dead, over 2000 houses damaged during monsoon rains in Azad Kashmir: SDMA

MUZAFFARABAD (Kashmir English): A total of 38 people have died and 31 have been injured due to various rain-related incidents in Azad Jammu and Kashmir during the monsoon season, according to the Azad Jammu and Kashmir State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA).

According to SDMA data, 2278 houses have been affected so far, many of which have completely collapsed. In addition, 60 shops have been destroyed and 238 livestock have been killed.

According to the report, 3 people have died, 5 have been injured, and more than 270 houses have been affected in Muzaffarabad and Jehlum Valley.

180 animals have died, and 15 infrastructure sites have been affected, along with 5 deaths in Neelum Valley.

2 people have died in Bagh, while 28 houses have been destroyed and 109 have been partially destroyed.

In Poonch, one person died and 102 houses were destroyed, while 392 were partially damaged. In Sidhnoti, one individual died, 67 houses were destroyed and 413 were partially damaged.

In Haveli, three people died, 34 houses were destroyed, and 456 were partially damaged. In Kotli, two people died, 25 houses were destroyed, and 310 were partially damaged.

In Bhimber, one individual died and 47 houses were damaged, while in Mirpur, two people died and 9 houses were destroyed.

In terms of infrastructure, 26 power houses were affected, while the communication system was also severely damaged. 100 km of C&W roads, 232 km of LG&RD roads, 79 bridges, and 124 water supply schemes were affected.

The flow of River Jhelum was recorded at 14,001 cusecs at Chakothi point, River Neelum at 619 cusecs at Karimabad point, and River Poonch at Kotli point was recorded at 7,219 cusecs.

The SDMA has clarified that all main highways in Azad Kashmir are open for all types of traffic. However, according to the Meteorological Department, rain, strong winds, and thunderstorms are likely in different parts of Azad Kashmir during the next 24 hours.
