CALIFORNIA (Kashmir English): YouTube is going to launch a new feature on 13 August 2025 that will use artificial intelligence to estimate user’s age.

Feature will gradually be introduced in other countries depending on results of initial trial.

The update aims to provide a safer and more suitable experience based on a user’s age. According to the company, the feature will initially be tested on a limited group of users in the United States.

The feature will employ machine learning to assess age by analysing factors such as account history, the categories of watched videos and search activity.

Underage users face restriction

If the feature assesses that a user may be underage, age-based restrictions will be applied automatically.

In case the AI cannot accurately assess age, users will be able to confirm that they are over 18 by submitting official identity documents, such as a government-issued ID or credit card.

The social media platform is of the view that the new technology will offer improved protection and a more appropriate experience for users, regardless of the date of birth listed on their account.

However, the system may enforce certain restrictions for younger users, which some may find unwelcome.
