Weather update: Thunderstorm, rain expected across Pakistan

ISLAMABAD (Kashmir English): The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has predicted rainfall, thunderstorms, and snowfall in various areas of the country from December 20 to 22 as the strong westerly weather system is approaching.

As per the National Weather Forecasting Centre, the weather system will enter Balochistan by December 19, and by December 20, it will result in disturbed weather in the upper regions of the entire country.

Rain with strong wind and thunderstorms are forecast in Balochistan starting in the evening of December 19 to December 20.

The following mountainous areas are also expected to get snow: Quetta, Ziarat, Chaman, Pishin, Quila Abdullah, Quila Saifullah, Zhob, Harnai, Noshki, Kalat, Khuzdar, Panjgur

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa may experience scattered rain, strong winds, and thunder showers from December 20 to December 22.

“Moderate snowfall is expected in the upper areas of Chitral, Dir, Swat, Shangla, Kohistan, Abbottabad, Mansehra, and Haripur, while rain is expected in the plains of Peshawar, Mardan, Swabi, Kohat, Bannu, and Dera Ismail Khan

Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Kashmir are expected to experience rain and snow with strong winds from the night of the 20th to the morning of the 23rd of December.

Heavy snowfall is possible at remote places in Skardu, Hunza, Astore, Gilgit, Neelum Valley, Muzaffarabad, Bagh, and

In Punjab and Islamabad, rainfall along with strong winds and thunder showers have been forecast from the evening of December 20 to December 21 in Islamabad, Rawalpindi, and Pothohar. There might be rain and snowfall in Murree and Galyat, along with the danger of landslides.

There are also chances of light rain/drizzle in Lahore, Gujranwala, Faisalabad, and Multan, and the adjacent districts

Advisory and Precautions

The PMD also issued an alert regarding the possibility of landslides/avalanches in the northern mountainous regions of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province, Gilgit-Baltistan, as well as in Kashmir.

Snowfall may cause closures of roads due to landslides/avalanches in Naran, Swat, Dir, Murree, Galiyat, and Skardu.

The tourists have been advised not to move around unnecessarily during these times. Central and southern Punjab, along with the upper Sindh region, are expected to remain in smog conditions. However, the authorities have advised the public to monitor the weather alerts and take the required precautionary measures.
