KHUIRATTA (Kashmir English): In an unprecedented incident, a buffalo gave birth to a calf with two heads and two mouths in Plana Gujran village near Khuiratta in AJK’s Kotli district. Villagers flocked to the locality to have a glimpse of the calf.

As per details, the buffalo mother unfortunately died soon after giving birth to the two-headed calf. The picture shared on social media shows that the animal has two heads, each with a mouth, nose, and eyes, but shares a single body.

They further said that when the calf is fed with milk from one side of the mouth, it comes out from the other side.

Similar cases have been reported earlier. For instance, Lucky Foods Dairy Farm in Karachi welcomed a two-headed buffalo calf in October,

These abnormal births are due to a rare congenital condition known as polycephaly, in which animals are born with one body but two heads and two mouths.

Medical experts say that it is caused by the incomplete splitting of an embryo into twins, leaving them connected. Each head of a polycephalic animal typically has its brain, and they share control of organs and limbs, although the specific connections vary between cases.
