WASHINGTON, DC (Kashmir English): Migration from “Third World Countries” is set to face a major halt in the United States, after President Donald Trump unveiled a wide set of new immigration restrictions on Thursday.
The president said the move was necessary to stabilize the system and respond to growing security concerns.
In late-night postings on Truth Social, Trump said that he would “permanently pause migration from all Third World Countries”, although he did not say how that list would be defined. He characterized those nations as dealing with high poverty and economic instability.
Trump also said he would undo “millions” of admissions approved under former President Joe Biden. He said that any person who “is not a net asset” to the country, or who “cannot love America,” would be removed.
Federal benefits and subsidies to noncitizens would also be terminated, he said, while migrants who disturb “domestic tranquillity” risk losing their legal status.
His remarks came one day after two National Guard members were shot near the White House. One of them died afterwards in a hospital. Investigators said the attacker was an Afghan national.
Shortly after the event, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services director Joseph Edlow said that his agency would review all Green Card holders from what he called “countries of concern.” The agency also stopped all immigration applications from Afghan nationals right away.
Since his return to office this year, Trump has advocated for a hard-line immigration policy. In June, he signed a wide-ranging travel ban that covered 19 countries, including Afghanistan.
