MUZAFFARABAD (Kashmir English): Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Muzaffarabad District, Riaz Haider Bukhari, has warned the public of online fraud and mentioned several ways gangs used to do online fraud to rob the innocent people.
According to the press release issued on Tuesday, SSP Riaz Haider said that Muzaffarabad Police is facing various challenges regarding online fraud. “While mentioning the modern technology in the present era, he shed light on online fraud in detail.”
The police officer said that gangs hack social media accounts through various ways and steal personal information, which is used to contact the family of that person or to the concerned person himself. Furthermore, they use modern technology to commit fraud by talking in fake and artificial voices of relatives and friends.
“The gangs use various software to make fake calls for fraud. In such fake calls, the telephone numbers of various companies, government institutions, and banks are shown,” the press release added.
They attach various attractive and financially beneficial pictures on social media accounts, which, when clicked, access your mobile gallery as well as your financial information. Then fraudsters blackmail citizens by calling them about their children or other relatives and demanding money.
The police officer, as per the statement, added that these fraudsters pretend to be policemen and blackmail citizens by informing them about the arrest of their children or other relatives and demanding money.
“They also attempt to extort money by fooling people through fake calls and SMS in the name of Benazir Income Support Program. Although the message of BISP and Ehsaas program will be received from their helpline,” SSP quoted as saying.
Moreover, the scammers and fraudsters obtain the individual’s information from social media accounts. They further pretend to be your friends or relatives and call you from abroad, and send fake and fictitious receipts that money has been sent from abroad and demand payment of a specific amount.
“The public is informed that they should never share personal information, identity card number, bank account details, password and other confidential information with anyone,” it read.
SSP Muzaffarabad warned the public not to give their information to any unknown call or email and urged the people to immediately contact the relevant institution and local police.
