ISLAMABAD: Gunshots fired by a member of the Taliban’s security forces at the United Nations’ largest compound in Kabul killed at least one person and injured another, according to the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA).

In a statement on Monday, UNAMA said that the incident took place a day earlier. Divulging on the identity of the person killed, the statement said he was a member of the Taliban-run security forces who was outside the compound. It didn’t offer any further details.

However, the Mission said that the person injured was an international security guard contracted by the UN. “UN-contracted security guards did not return fire during the incident,” it added.

UN investigation

It was unclear what provoked the incident with both the Taliban and the UN investigating the killing.

Meanwhile, Abdul Mateen Qaniee, country’s interior ministry spokesman, confirmed that a Taliban guard was killed and one UN contractor suffered injuries.

Immediately after the incident took place, Taliban authorities halted all movement in and out of the compound, but soon those restrictions were lifted, UNAMA said.

The compound houses the accommodation for UN international staff members and offices of multiple UN funds, agencies, and programmes.
