PARIS (Kashmir English): Referees at the 32-team Club World Cup 2025 will wear body cameras as they have been instructed to implement new rules to cut down on possible time-wasting by goalkeepers.

The tournament, a FIFA-organized international club soccer competition, will begin on June 14 and run until July 13 in the United States.

FIFA said the use of the cameras will be on a trial basis after the sport’s lawmakers, IFAB approved the same last month.

“We think that it is a good chance to offer the viewers a new experience, in terms of images taken from a perspective, from an angle of vision which was never offered before,” said chairman of the FIFA referees committee, Pierluigi Collina.

“It’s a combination of new experience for broadcasters and also for coaching purposes,” he added.

“Having the possibility to see what the referee sees is important in the debriefing, to evaluate how the call was made by the referee, which was his view, and so on.”

This year’s FIFA Club World Cup, also marketed as FIFA Club World Cup 25, is the planned 21st edition of the FIFA Club World Cup.

The 32-team competition in the United States will see a real crackdown on time-wasting by goalkeepers.

The referees have also been authorized to award a corner to the opposing team if they (goalkeepers) hold on to the ball beyond eight seconds.

The current rule states that ‘keepers are supposed to be sanctioned with an indirect free-kick if they hold on for more than six seconds’. However, the offence is rarely penalised.
