Internet Disrupted After Fibre Optics Cable Cut

The Lahore Electric Supply Company (LESCO) has again damaged fiber optic cables, which belong to internet service providers and cable television operators, throughout multiple sites in Lahore.

This disruption has caused an internet blackout, which affects schools and colleges throughout the city. The Pakistan Telecommunication Access Providers Association (PTAPA) and the Cable Operators Pakistan Association have released strong statements against the situation.

Cable operators and telecom sources report that LESCO teams broke cables in multiple locations, including Jail Road and Queens Road, Gulberg, and the area near Nazariya, Pakistan.

The action reportedly also knocked out Rescue 1122 emergency services, which raised serious concerns about the impact on public safety. Cable Operators Pakistan General Secretary Chaudhry Tahir Javaid condemned the move, pointing out that the country is going through an economic crisis and that both the Prime Minister and the Chief Minister of Punjab have directed educational institutions to shift to online classes and offices to operate online.

Every person in the country needs internet access for daily life, according to him. The government requires citizens to use the internet, yet LESCO has cut the infrastructure. PTAPA organized a strong protest, which showed the conflict between the government’s mission to establish 5G service in Pakistan and LESCO’s current action, which cuts basic internet service to residents of Lahore.

The association has previously written formal complaints to LESCO’s CEO, the PTA chairman, the Secretary of the Ministry of IT, and the Deputy Commissioner of Lahore, demanding an immediate halt to cable cutting.
