ISLAMABAD (Kashmir English): With the Pakistan Super League (PSL) preparing to mark its landmark 10th edition, defending champions Islamabad United are entering the tournament with renewed energy and sharpened focus. As franchises finalise their squads and strategies, all eyes are on United, who are determined not only to defend their title but also to raise the bar for excellence.

The tournament is set to kick off on Friday, and United’s Head Coach, Mike Hesson, has thrown down the gauntlet to his players, urging them to go beyond last season’s success. On Tuesday evening, the team’s training session showcased intense commitment and clear intent. Known for his meticulous planning and tactical awareness, Hesson left no doubt about his expectations.

“Last season brought us glory, but good is never enough when we can strive for greatness,” said Hesson. “We’ve identified small flaws from last year, and our aim now is to address them. We’re not just aiming to defend our title, we’re looking to evolve and set a new standard.”

Islamabad United began training at the Islamabad Club grounds on Monday before moving to the Pindi Stadium on Tuesday. Hesson explained that each practice session is tailored to simulate match conditions. “We’re setting real-time targets in training as if we’re already playing in the league. It’s encouraging to see the players taking on challenges with such intensity.”

The coach also praised emerging talents Mohammad Shahzad, Saad Masood, and Hanain Shah, expressing confidence in their potential. “There’s some truly exciting talent here. Shahzad and Saad, in particular, are promising players for the future,” he noted.

Sahibzada Farhan, fresh off a successful domestic season, also earned Hesson’s praise. “He’s coming in strong and we’re optimistic about his contributions in the upcoming matches. He’s certainly a contender for the top order,” he added. Hesson shared his enthusiasm about working with the squad, saying, “I’m thoroughly enjoying my time with United.”

Meanwhile, Salman Ali Agha and Naseem Shah have rejoined the team after returning from the Pakistan team’s tour of New Zealand. United are set to take on Lahore Qalandars in their opening match on April 11.

Lahore Qalandars, too, are close to completing their squad, with overseas players David Wiese, Sam Billings, Rishad Hossein, and Kusal Perera already arriving in Islamabad following their training camp in Lahore.

On Tuesday, Peshawar Zalmi, who will play the Quetta Gladiators at Pindi Stadium on April 12, practiced there. Ahead of their debut, the team has added important players, including Babar Azam, Saim Ayub, Luke Wood, Mitchell Owen, and Alzarri Joseph.
