VATICAN CITY (Kashmir English): Pope Francis dies at the age of 88 years old, according to a video statement issued by the Vatican on Monday.

He was the the first Latin American to lead the Roman Catholic Church. His 12-year papacy was marked by efforts to reform the Church, often facing resistance and division along the way.

He had recently battled serious health issues, including a case of double pneumonia.

“Dear brothers and sisters, it is with profound sadness I must announce the death of our Holy Father Francis,” said Cardinal Kevin Farrell on Vatican TV “At 7:35AM (10:35 PKT) this morning, the Bishop of Rome, Francis, returned to the house of the Father.”

Just a day before Pope Francis died, he had spoken out with urgency and compassion, calling for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza.

Addressing thousands during Easter Sunday Mass in Vatican City, he condemned the suffering caused by the ongoing violence and urged peace for both Israelis and Palestinians.

“I express my closeness to the sufferings of all the Israeli people and the Palestinian people,” he said. “I appeal to the warring parties: call a ceasefire, release the hostages, and come to the aid of a starving people that longs for peace.”

His words, like much of his papacy, were a reflection of his deep concern for the vulnerable and his hope for a more just world.

Pope Francis had long struggled with chronic lung issues and had part of one lung removed in his youth. He was admitted to Gemelli Hospital on February 14, 2025, after a respiratory issue that turned into double pneumonia.

He remained there for 38 days, the longest hospital stay of his papacy, battling the illness with quiet strength and resilience.

The Vatican has not yet shared details about his funeral or the steps ahead in choosing his successor.
