ISLAMABAD (Kashmir English): The Prime Minister of Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) , Chaudhry Anwar-ul-Haq, has firmly stated that empowering, strengthening, and dignifying local government institutions remains his unwavering commitment, which will be implemented without compromise. He sent a clear message to those attempting to weaken the state, declaring that his government will not bow down to disruptive elements.
Speaking as the chief guest at an iftar dinner hosted by Minister for Local Government and Rural Development, Raja Faisal Mumtaz Rathore, in honour of local government representatives from across AJK, the Prime Minister stressed the importance of national security. He urged all leaders to prioritise the welfare of the nation over personal interests, stating that local government representatives form the foundation of the future AJK Assembly.
He emphasised that the dignity and respect of local representatives will remain intact, adding that even those who did not attend the event would be engaged in discussions. He further clarified that, under the AJK Constitution, two governments exist, one formed through the Assembly and the other composed of elected local government representatives.
The Prime Minister reaffirmed that anti-military and anti-state rhetoric will not be tolerated in AJK. He condemned efforts to weaken the region, highlighting that India’s terrorist government is spending billions on social media campaigns to promote anti-state narratives. However, he assured that these attempts would fail, as the foundation of the state has been built upon the sacrifices of their forefathers.
The event was attended by senior government ministers, including Waqar Ahmed Noor, Raja Faisal Mumtaz Rathore, Chaudhry Azhar Sadiq, Ahmed Raza Qadri, Sardar Aamir Altaf, and several others, along with hundreds of district councillors and union council chairpersons from across AJK.
In his address, the Prime Minister welcomed local representatives, noting that this was his government’s first formal gathering where no ministers were seated on stage. He described this as a strong message to those trying to weaken the state. He stressed that his administration stands with local government representatives, as they are an integral part of the system.
Highlighting the importance of stability, he stated, “Politics exists because the state exists, and therefore, everyone must act responsibly.” He clarified that the iftar dinner was neither intended to favour nor exclude anyone but was simply a platform for engagement.
The Prime Minister acknowledged that while an agreement had been reached between the government and local representatives, any flaws within it could be addressed. He rejected the notion that coercion would force the government to accept demands, urging local representatives to exercise wisdom. He assured that the local government system would be strengthened under his leadership, with no compromise on their authority or respect.
Addressing economic concerns, he stated that despite previous doubts, his government had successfully managed resources, ensuring the provision of subsidised electricity and wheat. He reaffirmed his commitment to dialogue, stating that refusing discussions is against democratic values. He also assured that amendments to local government laws, as requested by representatives, would be considered within the AJK Assembly.
The Prime Minister dismissed propaganda against him, asserting that his government’s patience should not be mistaken for weakness. He stressed that democracy functions through discussion and problem-solving, and the government will not back down from meaningful conversations.
Regarding financial matters, he announced that one billion rupees had been allocated for local government representatives, with additional funds expected from the federal government. He reassured them that their powers would not be curtailed and that constitutional and legal amendments would be made by their aspirations.
Local representatives expressed their gratitude towards the Prime Minister and the Minister for Local Government, praising their efforts to resolve concerns. Various speakers at the event called for the government to honour its agreements and ensure that funds for local development projects are increased.
Senior Minister Waqar Ahmed Noor assured that the government was committed to presenting necessary amendments in the Assembly. However, he mentioned that legal constraints following a court decision had temporarily delayed the process.
In closing, the Prime Minister reiterated that local representatives play a crucial role in governance and that the government will provide them with the necessary support to ensure a strong and effective local government system in AJK.
